Ages 0-2: Humans First, Screens Second

For the youngest kids, this section is for parents β€” not for solo viewing.

Evidence Brief

The Science

The American Academy of Pediatrics (2016 policy, "Media and Young Minds") recommends no digital media for children under 18 months, with the single exception of live video chat. The World Health Organization (2019 guidelines on physical activity and screen time for children under 5) recommends zero sedentary screen time under age 2. The underlying reason is the "video deficit effect" (Anderson & Pempek, 2005; Barr, 2013): infants under two learn significantly less from a screen than from a live human. Kuhl et al. (2003) found infants learned foreign-language phonemes from live tutors but not from identical video lessons.

Screen Time

AAP: none under 18 months except video chat. 18–24 months: only high-quality programming, co-viewed with a caregiver who narrates and responds.

What to Avoid

Avoid all solo viewing, background TV (Christakis et al., 2009 β€” background TV reduces adult-infant speech by ~770 words per hour), and any fast-cut content. Video chat with family is the AAP-approved exception.

This section is for parents

Under age 2, the strongest evidence says live human interaction beats any screen. Our editorial stance aligns with the AAP and WHO: zero solo screen time under 18 months except for video chat with family.

What works instead: sing, narrate, read physical books, video-chat with grandparents. When your child turns two, come back β€” we'll have curated co-viewing videos and simple tap games ready.
