Ages 6-8: Games That Teach
Reading fluency and working memory take off. Creation beats consumption.
The Science
Reading networks consolidate; working memory expands; metacognition emerges. Clark, Tanner-Smith & Killingsworth (2016, Review of Educational Research) meta-analyzed educational games and found modest but consistent learning gains versus non-game instruction. Donnelly et al. (2016, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise), an ACSM-commissioned review, shows physical activity continues to support cognition at this age. Hale & Guan (2015, Sleep Medicine Reviews) systematic review: screens in the bedroom are linked to worse sleep — 67% of studies showed the effect.
Screen Time
AAP age 6+: no specific hour cap — focus on protected zones (meals, bedrooms, pre-bed), balance with sleep (9-12 hr), physical activity, and in-person social time.
What to Avoid
Avoid screens in the bedroom and screens within the hour before sleep (Hale & Guan, 2015). Avoid social media platforms (APA 2023 health advisory). Limit realistic violence.
