The Science
The limbic/reward system matures faster than the prefrontal cortex during this stage (Casey & Jones, 2010 — the "imbalance model"), making tweens especially sensitive to novelty and social reward. The U.S. Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on social media and youth mental health recommends delaying access to social platforms. Twenge et al. (2018, Clinical Psychological Science) documented an association between social media use and adolescent depression — especially for girls — although the effect size has been debated (Orben & Przybylski, 2019).
